Preserving Shore History
Once named The Sea Cliff Villa by its original owner, an Irish immigrant and New York City banker, Stella Maris represents the “stick style”, the first architectural style native to America. A portion of the building was the summer home to Ulysses S Grant. Current owners and caretakers, The Sisters of St. Joseph of Peace, purchased the villa in 1941. An additional section of the property was acquired in 1963 transforming the location into a center for spiritual healing and reflection and a resource for local organizations, schools, and religious groups of all denominations.

Constructed in 1868, Stella Maris Retreat Center is a proud part of Monmouth County’s architectural heritage and exemplifies the area’s reputation as the “Queen of Resorts.” Today Stella Maris faces serious financial challenges to maintain its architecture, grounds, and programs. The preservation of this beloved building is essential to save a part of the Jersey Shore’s exciting history.

Through the generosity of friends and proceeds from the “Sprit of the Shore” event, The Sisters of St. Joseph of Peace hope to meet the challenges of maintaining this community jewel.

Grounds for Applause
The tented event will feature breathtaking views from a seaside cliff overlooking the Atlantic Ocean. Stella Maris boasts seven acres of gorgeous grounds that the Sisters have restored to their natural beauty using organic gardening techniques and plants native to the region such as the Rosa virginiana.

The result has been remarkable and their grounds now boast abundant vegetable and herb gardens, blooming memorial gardens, “bed and breakfast” bird feeders, and wild grasses, all attracting threatened species such as the monarch butterfly, purple martin, piping plovers, and more. The gardens serve as outdoor science classrooms for hundreds of school children from local schools, as well as a place of quiet reflection for those who visit.

The Center initiatives’ are award winning, including their Women’s Spiritual Renewal Retreats with special emphasis on spirituality, renewal, and contemporary spiritual issues. Waterspirit offers opportunities for all ages to become familiar with water issues, and Sisters of St Joseph of Peace are represented at the United Nations where they concentrate on environmental issues.

Each fall, Stella Maris also hosts a Memorial Mass on September 11th for people who have lost loved ones. Families are then invited to enjoy the grounds and memorial gardens, concluding the day with a release of butterflies into the afternoon skies.
