If your in DC or Maryland, why not skip Ocean City Maryland and head to the Jersey Shore?

Being a Baltimore native, I two used to go to Ocean City Maryland during the summer, that is until I found the Cape May – Lewes Ferry and discovered the Jersey Shore.  Taking the Cape May – Lewes Ferry made short work of the driving and I was Cape May County, in little over and hour.  Besides being a nice change from sitting in traffic there is a lot to see near both the Cape May &  Lewes side of the Delaware River.

Cape May, New Jersey

Cape May is known for its Victorian homes and bed & breakfast inns.  It is more of a resort with a beach, nice shops, 5 star restaurants, and walking or trolley tours.   The kids will have a chance to learn something new at Historic Cold Spring Village on Rt 9 in Erma, the Wetlands Institute in Stone Harbor,  Cape May Historical Museum and the Cape May County Park & Zoo in Cape May Court House.  The nightlife in Cape May is more refined that in some other shore towns so make sure to pack your best Tommy Bahamas. There are also shuttles available to the Casino specked shore town called Atlantic City.  And these are all with in 35 – 45 minutes of the Cape May Terminal.

Vacation Rentals

Lewes, Delaware

The town of Lewes is situated where the Delaware Bay and Atlantic Ocean meet at Cape Henlopen. Nowhere can the beauty of Cape Henlopen State Park be equaled and it is only one mile from the terminal. In this preserved land you find miles of beautiful beaches, nature trails and bird sanctuaries. Lewes is a walking town. Within a half-square mile you will find the Historic district, museums, many Inns, Bed and Breakfasts, fine restaurants, and a variety of fine shops.

Fort Miles

Built in 1941, the massive coastal fortification was designed to defend assets along the Delaware River and Bay such as oil refineries and factories, as well as the city of Philadelphia during the Second World War.  It was one of the largest and most heavily armed coastal fortifications ever built.

Outlets

There are three Rehoboth Outlet Centers that are approximately five miles from the Lewes terminal. Shuttle service runs seven days a week from 6/19 thru 9/26. Weekend shuttle service is provided 5/1 thru 6/13 and 10/2 thru 10/31. The shuttle drivers will be sure you know the pickup times before you get off.  And if you want to try out a Delaware beach, The Town of Rehoboth Beach is only seven miles away.

  1. I have been going to OC MD for years and finally decided to convince the wife to go for the ferry.

We went once walking (took the shuttle to downtown Cape May) and the second time with our truck.

Terrific trips, and not as expensive as I would have thought. We will go again. I noticed bikes are popular on Cape May might take those next time instead.
