Fourth Annual Borgata Winter Open Championship Generates Over $3 Million Prize Pool

Championship Event attracts 1,016 Players Vying For Borgata Winter Open Title

ATLANTIC CITY, NJ (January 26, 2009) – Borgata Hotel Casino & Spa kicked off the Borgata Winter Open Championship Event yesterday, drawing 1,016 players and shattering the $2 million guarantee prize pool, generating a $3,048,000 prize pool and an incredible $657,758 first-place prize.

Sunday’s Day One action featured an eclectic mix of contenders looking to take home the elusive championship title. Featuring a mixture of 439 cash game players, satellite winners and several notable professional players, the action moved rapidly throughout the day, leaving 284 lucky survivors that will make Tuesday’s Day Two action. Notable players seeing action on the day included Alan “Bodog Ari” Engle, Jason Young, Matt Glantz, Maria Ho, Young Phan, Beth Shak, Jacobo Fernandez and the day’s highest finishing notable Bill “The Stunning One” Edler.

Thanks to the guaranteed $2 million prize pool, players continued to flock to the Event Center floor with hopes of a possible overlay, but they were denied due to the monster turnout. Monday’s second Day One flight topped the previous day’s number, drawing 577 participants, all with hopes of being one of the top one hundred players that will be lucky enough make the money. Featuring the deepest field of this year’s Borgata Winter Open, the second Day One flight attracted some of poker’s biggest names. Top players seeing action on the day included Ted Forrest, Victor Ramdin, Kathy Liebert, Roy Winston, Cliff “JohnnyBax” Josephy, Bill Gazes, Matt “All_in_at_420” Stout, Hevad Khan, Shawn Deeb, Mark Seif, Eugene Tood, James Sowers, Lacey Jones, Tiffany Michele and Anna Wroblewski.

According to the only three-time Poker Open winner Bill “Big Daddy” Blanda, Borgata hit the nail on the head when it comes to tournament poker. “This tournament is a testament to the creativity of the higher-ups at Borgata. They had the insight to know what the players want. Aside from the World Series of Poker, where else can you spend $3,000 to win over $650,000?”
