Weekend Events for May 30th & 31st and June 1st at the Jersey Shore

Island Heights

Barnegat Bay National Estuary Program

Sunday June 1, 2008 is the 11th annual Barnegat Bay Festival. Once again it will be held at the beautiful Wanamaker Complex in Island Heights. It is a wonderful family event for Ocean County residents.

Environmental groups as well as state and local agencies provide excellent exhibits that focus on the environmentally responsible ways that we all can enjoy and protect the Barnegat Bay and its watershed. Free Festival fun for the entire family includes fish printing, marine crafts, seedling planting, and so much more. Attendees also enjoy decoy carving, casting demonstrations, interactive touch tanks and other educational displays exploring life along the Bay, past and present.

Festival-goers get up close and personal with the Bay, taking advantage of eco-tours such as kayaking through area creeks or the free scenic cross-bay boat trip with Ocean County naturalists aboard the educational pontoon boat. Artisans and crafters sell custom fishing rods, custom made skiffs, jewelry, marine art, photography; live music is provided throughout the day. We anticipate over 1,000 attendees.

This year’s festival is themed: Go Green! We All Want the Bay Clean…and is targeting hands-on and very personal ways each attendee can make a difference each and every day in their commitment to the environment.

The Titanic struck an iceberg, and sank two hours and forty minutes later. At the time of her launching in 1912, she was the largest passenger steamship in the world. May 31st 2008 2pm-3pm Enjoy Mermaids, Pirates and Sea Chanteys at Court House Library

You will tap your toes and clap your hands as you hear some of the most infectious and well-loved sea chanteys ever to have graced the great clipper ships and fishing boats of the 18th and 19th centuries. The ballads tell of great high sea tales of travels from the Caribbean to Australia and around the world. This program precedes the Cold Spring Village’s “Celtic Festival” the following weekend where Cochran will be a strolling minstrel and puppeteer/storyteller.

Nancy G. Cochrane, Strolling Minstrel/Tunes and Tales, with a vocal sound reminiscent of Joan Baez, picks a 12 string guitar, autoharp, and dulcimer to accompany the best Celtic, Ethnic, and Early American tunes.
